With all the buzz around blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing almost sounds passé. But the fact is we’ve only just recently crossed over into a world where cloud apps and infrastructure outnumber premise-based solutions—there’s still a long way to go.
According to IDG’s 2018 Cloud Computing Study, which surveyed 550 key decision makers on their cloud usage and future plans, seventy-three percent of respondents said they were using at least one cloud application or a portion of their infrastructure in the Cloud. The study also found that annual enterprise investment in the Cloud has more than doubled since 2016 with enterprises expected to spend an average of $3.5 million on cloud apps, platforms, and services in 2019.
Cloud Impact on Digital Transformation
While the cost and ease-of-use benefits alone have driven cloud adoption, companies are also finding that they can greatly accelerate their digital transformation efforts with cloud integration. A recent ZDNet article by Forrester Vice President and Principal Analyst Dave Bartoletti discussed this phenomenon, taking a fresh look at the latest cloud trends and giving an update on the firm’s top predictions for 2019. Take a look:
- Big Cloud Providers Will Get Bigger: According to Forrester, enterprise spending in cloud services will continue to “surge” in 2019 with the major cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, continuing to grow their businesses.
- Containerized Apps and Serverless Computing: Rapidly developing applications is the new competitive advantage. Enterprise container platforms from companies, such as Docker, are enabling developers to build cloud-native apps from scratch—quickly and specifically to support your business.
- New Private Cloud Approaches: According to the article, cloud adoption is growing in the public cloud and the data center. Enterprises are demanding “on-premises versions of cloud services” and are increasingly using hybrid approaches.
